Welcome to Sunday Sermon Share Day for 6/16/13
Today’s sermon comes from Allen Chapel AME in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Today’s Subject is:
Peace in the midst of a storm
Today’s Scripture selections from are:
Mark 4:32-41
Highlights from Today’s Sermon:
It’s difficult to predict what the weather will be. We have seasons and in some areas it’s an even climate year-round. But for many parts there’s rain one day and sunshine the next, fires one day and earthquakes the next. God said we’d have perilous times in the last days. God’s last days aren’t our last days.
If you study the gospel, God’s Word, you would find stability if you follow His word.
Mark is trying to get across to us if we call upon the name of Jesus we can have stability in our lives. If we live in this world we will have storms. If you haven’t been through one then you haven’t lived long enough. Storms aren’t predicable. You can run but you can’t hide.
Man thinks he can do so many great things like go to the moon, build technology, travel the world, and so many other things— but God is the Creator of all.
Our life is finite and transitional.
1. Verse 39
Don’t worry about what others are doing, or what they are doing across town. God is trying to do something different
2. Verse 37—the great storm
Have you ever felt like you have been tossed and driven? How many of you woke up this morning but didn’t want to get out of bed?
Even when Jesus is sleep he has your best interest at hand.
Disciples freaking out thinking the ship would sink but Jesus was resting. Many of us live our lives just like that, we’re constantly thinking that our ships are going to sink.
You must obey God’s commands if you want stability in your lives.
In your life you will have to listen to the command, “peace be still”. When your life is in shambles, peace be still.
1a. Command
In John Hope Franklin’s book “From Slavery to Freedom”
he’s originally from Oklahoma. A system designed to keep us down, we must get our heads out of the sand. Although the world is cruel to us sometimes we must turn to God and keep our heads up.
From slavery to segregation to criminal justice system (locking up our men) 24 million children woke up this morning with no father in the home. When you get arrested with a felony, the felony replaces segregation. Since they can’t discriminate against you legally, there’s a way to do so legally when you are a felon. You can be denied a job, housing, the right to vote, and the opportunity to live in certain areas.
Men stay with your family. Stay in your home. Take care of your family. That is not your baby mama that is your child’s mother. That is not your baby’s daddy, that’s your child’s father.
2a. Control
When you have a calm assurance that Jesus is yours you have control over your circumstances. You believe and know that Jesus is the center of your joy. God made you. He made you in His image. Don’t let someone tell you you’re a nobody. You are somebody. You are a child of God. You are a product of the King. Accept His calm in your life.
3. He cares
Jesus calmed the storm and then asked the disciples why they were so fearful and had no faith.
No matter what they do to me I’m going to stay with the Lord, my church, my family…I’m going to trust in the Lord, I’m going to stay on my bended knees.
They separated the children, the men, husbands and fathers, children from their mothers during slavery—people said we wouldn’t make it but the Father proved otherwise.
Pull your pants up. Pull those britches up.
That’s not your baby’s mama. She’s the mother of your child. Treat her like a woman.
The Pastor of Allen Chapel shared a story about his father who was a bell hop at a hotel for over 30 years carrying the bags of the rich white patrons. He dressed immaculately. He walked with his head up and shoulder’s back. Every time they rang a bell he ran. Every time he was called “boy” he answered. He told his son (pastor) “it doesn’t matter what they call me I know who I am”. When the same rich white man got old and couldn’t run his business he sold it to the pastor’s father. Isn’t that ironic.
Get the book, “The New Jim Crow” By Michelle Alexander. You thought segregation was dead. Segregation just has on a new dress. It tells you why your babies, our babies, are locked up today. We’re having church and business as usual. Every person here is affected by the system.
We must take it seriously. We must be about our Father’s business. We must break out of the walls of the church and minister to God’s children. We must get to the streets to serve, and to bring the people into the church. We come into the church to worship and go in to the community to serve.
Sunday School Highlights Shared by the Youth:
Students learned about: Parable about the Pharisees and tax collectors.
Accepting of God’s children regardless of how they look, what they wear, or how they sound. It doesn’t matter if they don’t have expensive clothes or shoes. It doesn’t matter what they wear on their back or feet. They may not have a suit or dress. When someone walks into church they should not be judged.
All who humble themselves will be exalted.
