Thank You Father for this day and all that may come. Thank You for those who have paved the way before me, for those who sacrificed much or all, for my direct or indirect benefit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Reflection

Let me start off by first thanking those men and women in the armed forces who served, even through fear, and sacrificed, for all of us. I don’t take for granted the peaceful days and nights, free of tyranny, bombing, air strikes, land mines, and the tears and cries of children and parents.

I don’t live in a perfect country, as there is no perfect—I do live in a country that has thousands of men and women of all nationalities and religions who have protected and protect by land, sea, and air—both domestic and global.

Words cannot fully express my humble gratitude and appreciation for those service members who give their time, lives, limbs, days and nights, and so much more, for their country and the world.

I want to also thank the families of service members, those of vets of the past and present, and the families of active duty members. It takes a lot of endurance, strength, and courage to know that your loved one is here today but may be gone tomorrow, due to their commitment to a mission.

Your prayers never cease as you long for the day your family member returns from duty. Many of you have lost loved ones during times of war and even times of peace. You remember your last words, conversations, letters, gifts, jokes, and moments. I thank you for your selflessness and support, as that soldier bravely took their post each day. Thank you.

Pray

Father thank You for not making this easy, as I wouldn’t appreciate all that I am and all that I have if it weren’t for my experiences and Your loving discipline. I’m humbly grateful Father. Amen.

Reflection

The child who is spoiled and never disciplined is the one who grows entitled to believe that all they want is theirs for the taking. A parent’s discipline is love. Whether through fear, disappointment or anger, the discipline followed by a teaching lesson, is one that a parent gives when they want their child to know and do better.

The same is true of domestic and wild animals. Watch them with their children. They too will discipline, correct, and protect their young. We learn this from our relationship with God.

Imagine if God gave us everything we asked for when we asked for it. There would be no law and order, no consequences, and no valuable lessons to be learned. We would actually be beneath the animals He entrusted us to govern.

We need structure in our lives. We learn from our experiences what to do or what to avoid, we learn the how and why, and we learn that all actions have a consequence attached.

Even in our pain let’s look for the lesson and the blessing. It may be in our heartache that a blessing comes for others. As Jesus sacrificed for us, what will we ultimately sacrifice for others?

Thank You Father for always loving and guiding me, for being here for me, never letting me down, and for the countless blessings. My life is possible only through and by You. May I continue to walk on the path You have set before me, never straying from or delaying my journey. In Jesus’ name I pray to You, as Your child, follower, and servant. Amen.

Reflection

It’s not just good enough to believe in the reality of God’s presence in our lives. Do you believe that God is the beginning, middle, and end? Do you believe that all problems have His solutions tied to them? Do you believe in His ability to heal, resurrect, make whole, and reveal all things at any given time? Do you believe that He hears your prayers and never leaves your questions or requests unanswered?

It’s not just in the good times that we should praise Him, but in the bad—at the beginning and middle of a storm, as it’s ramping up its strength—where does your faith lie?

The eviction, lost job, repossession, broken down car, illness, injury, burglary or robbery—what is your first thought and whom do you first call upon?

What and who do you truly believe in? Is it God? Only you and Him really know.

Father I try each day to speak the truth at all times, in all ways, to all people. In our struggle to avoid hurting someone’s feelings, or to avoid conflict and potential chaos—we risk the lies. Father help us with our truth seeking and truth speaking. Amen.

Reflection

Human kind cannot afford to live a life based on lies. We cannot afford to live with filtering, omission, and deception. In our lies we lack trust. With lack of trust we cannot protect ourselves or each other. Our lies keep us divided. Our lies keep us from having the type of life and kind of relationship with God that we want.

Today was not earned by the efforts I made yesterday. Thank You Father for this blessing. Forgive me for the weakness I cling to that holds me back, builds up my doubt, forces out the harmful words, and dwells on fear and pain. Fill me with Your peace and calm, so that I might let go and release this weakness that hinders my growth. Forgive me Lord for my sins. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Reflection

We all have sinned, do sin, and for those reasons we need to stop placing ourselves above others—superior in our judgments, as though we have done and do no wrong. Even with our crosses, fish stickers, WWJD t-shirts, Bibles all over our homes, offices and cars—if we are not accepting, embracing, and loving ALL of God’s children, as Jesus did, then we fall short in all ways. In your “righteousness” you can actually be farther below those you look down upon.

Father thank You for this day. Another day of life, demonstration, and reflection. Another day filled with opportunities. I’m humbly grateful for the gift of today. I hope to honor You in my words and deeds. I praise You Father. Amen.

Reflection

Let me start off today’s message by sending a prayer of peace and comfort to my friends and neighbors, the White’s, who have been blindsided by the news of a family member’s passing due to a car accident. No one is ever truly prepared for death, and most definitely not a sudden one where there was an absence of a trigger leading to this transition. We slowly prepare through diagnoses and prognoses. The wind is knocked out of us when it just happens without warning.

We all know that our days are numbered here on earth, in these bodies, within this level of existence. But in this human form with human emotions, and flawed logic, even though we know this to be true—we’re still not genuinely prepared and fully accepting of the reality that we all must transition, sooner than we wish for.

Jesus tried to prepare his disciples for the day of his transition. They clearly weren’t prepared, had doubt and reservations, and were even skeptical upon his return after being crucified.

In many ways it would appear that many of Jesus’s disciples merely saw him as a motivational speaker who somehow channeled God’s power to heal, and somehow some of them could perform some of those healings. Of the countless healings, not all of which are chronicled in the Bible, the fact that most followed him in doubt, just shows the flaws of humankind.

With doubt then, while he walked with them, why are we then surprised more than 2,000 years later that people would still doubt him and God? We clearly have doubt because we’re still trying to control things that we have no control over.

When Jesus tells the disciples not to be concerned with dates and time that only God sets and determines, and that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit, even in their anticipation there were possibly still strands of doubt in their minds. They still needed to see to believe. When he said they would be his witnesses throughout all of earth, there were most likely more than a handful who said to themselves, “and how is that possible when we haven’t even seen all of earth? How can we possibly witness at such great distance?”

Humans were told from the very beginning (of life as we know it) that all of this (life, death, God’s power, etc.) would be too much to comprehend, that we should just go with the flow and trust the process. But as descendants of Adam and Eve, I guess we will keep listening to the snake, believing that we can be equal to God (or somehow garner enough controlling power that we don’t have to rely upon Him for everything), biting the apple, and finding ourselves fully exposed and ignorant.

God is our Source for all that we need.

Even though I just typed that last sentence, and you will read it, the vast majority of us will still go on about our day thinking that we have some significant influence on the change in our lives. When the reality is, that only when we’re open and receptive do we receive—and what we receive, only comes from God’s will and grace. He determines and sets the dates and time for all.

PrayFather I want to thank You for this day, another day, blessed by You. May I honor You through my words and actions. If I fail to do so, please forgive me Father. I strive to walk upright and follow the steps of Your son, Jesus Christ, to be more like him, in honor of You. I humbly pray for your continued grace. Amen.

Reflection

We are God’s children. His creations. His works of masterpiece. No mistakes has He made. Our journey is tied to our purpose–along the way we should be demonstrating His goodness. Jesus showed us how. Let’s follow his lead.

Father You know my needs, wants, and desires. Some things are of greater priority than others, only because they impact other people beyond myself. I humbly ask for these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Reflection

I can recall that for many years I never asked God for anything in Jesus’ name. I was disconnected from what and whom Jesus really was and is in my life, as the Son of God, and as our first proof of life after we shed our human shells.

Jesus said that it is only through him do we reach our Father. Only through him do we find and know the Truth. Only through him do we see our ability to bear the cross and carry those dreaded yokes.

I’m grateful for my strengthened relationship with Jesus which in turn has led to a strengthened relationship with God.

Proverbs 16:9

Pray

Father thank You for this day, a day I did not earn by winning a race or passing a test, but simply because of Your love and grace. You have plans for me and I don’t want to disrupt what You have envisioned for my present and future. You have instilled magnificent qualities in me, one of which is a desire to excel and achieve greatness in Your name—but even with the plans I have for myself, I understand that You and only You order my steps.

So I will work on being more patient, relying on the gift of discernment blessed by You, and open my eyes to see and experience all that You have planned for me. In Jesus’ name I humbly pray and give thanks to You Father. Amen.

Reflection

My husband always laughs when he says to me and others (and even himself), “If you wanna make God laugh, tell Him your plans,” translation…God’s plans for us supersede our own. He orders our steps. It doesn’t matter what you want to accomplish by a set date, God determines the who, when, where, and how.

Things happen on His schedule not ours. Blessings come when He determines, not just because we want them. This means that we must be patient in our walk. The length of our journey is unknown to all but Him, but we shouldn’t try to rush through it or we will most definitely miss out on great lessons and experiences, and face many failures that could’ve been avoided through patience and discernment.

Take each step, making sure to look down and around at your surroundings. My maternal grandfather (“Poppa”) taught me the lesson of always looking where I walk. He used to say to me as a child, “don’t walk around like city folks with your head up in the air, you won’t be able to see what you’re stepping on or what’s about to attack you below“. You don’t know how these words of wisdom have saved me from snakes, fire ants, potholes, open man holes, construction nails, broken steps, toxic substances, broken glass and other sharp objects, slippery surfaces, and even that dreaded bubble gum some careless person left on the ground. It sounds funny, but some of those things could have led to serious injury or possibly death.

But those words from my grandfather have also saved me in my personal and professional dealings. They have reminded me to look around at all times, at the people I associate with, at my business colleagues, and complete strangers on the street.

When you walk making sure to also look down, and not just up, you can’t help but to see the people that are working to get to your level in life. You then are faced with the options to reach out your hand to lift someone up, hold the elevator for them so they can walk in, or send it back down if it closed too soon; or you have the option of turning away your eyes and looking up to where you’re trying to go.

I personally refuse to do the latter.

By looking around me and down, I’m more inclined to show others the stepping stones I chose, and direct them around the ones that I fell through. There’s a sense of selflessness, humility and humbleness that comes with being centered this way.

When I walk around each day I hear my Poppa’s voice, like a guardian angel. I can’t help but to smile brightly.

So my brothers and sisters, please remember for each step that you take to look around you and below. Also remember with each step, to be mindful of your past while fully embracing the present, and remaining hopeful for the future. Be obedient with each step. If God says, “take one” don’t attempt to take more because in your mind you think, “I can do more than one“. Do as God says.

Oh that is the most difficult and frustrating thing to do.

Our disobedience causes us so many delays in life, I can attest to that, as I’m so hard-headed that I know God has to have a sense of humor. If He didn’t, I know I would’ve been snatched off of this planet a long time ago. But God has more patience, love—and yes, even humor, than all of us combined, and I’m so grateful for this. I’m so grateful for my life and the people that God has blessed me to know and love.

I pray that today’s message has put a smile on your face. Enjoy today’s steps on your amazing journey!

Pray

Father please continue to lovingly remind me that people are a mirror of the things inside me that I like, dislike, fear, or embrace. Remind me to not ask of others what I wouldn’t do for them. Remind me to walk the walk, not just talk the talk—being and not just reciting, living and not just wishing, praying and not worrying. I pray for these loving reminders in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Reflection

In life we have givers and takers, and plainly put, in our relationship with God we’re all basically takers, because we don’t even scratch the surface in our giving to Him or in His name. But back to my original point…

In our human interactions, we have some takers who think that they are givers, because they measure what they have done for others—but they fail to look closely at the countless times they have reminded people of what they did for them, or they have a sense of expectation that in their giving they are to receive something in return. That my brothers and sisters is not giving, that is the act of conducting business. It is transactional through and through.

If you don’t like people expecting things of you, don’t do the same in return. If you don’t like people reminding you what they did for you, don’t waste your time reminding people what you did for them. If you don’t like giving handouts, stop walking around with yours extended in anticipation of receiving.

If you ever want to see my eyes twitch, watch me when I hear someone say to me or anyone for that matter, “I did ____for you” or “I gave you ___” and in their statements they force in their expectation of gratitude or compensation by their standards.

I shriek when people give with expectations of receiving something more than a “thank you” in return, and even that should not be one’s motivation or expectation when giving. It would be nice to know that someone is thankful, but it should not be our requirement. Besides, I’ve given to people who have said their thanks, but their actions were anything but appreciative, so words don’t always carry much value. I’ve learned to just give because that is what I would want someone to do for me. Everyone but God disappoints.

It’s nice to be repaid for money you gave to someone, or contributed on their behalf, but unless a stated loan, we really shouldn’t expect the money to be repaid. We should see it as a gift and hope that the person will one day pay it forward, and gift to someone else as you did for them. Additionally, in your giving, silence your mouth from it’s desperate need to receive credit for the giving. You did it. Get over yourself.

What if Jesus reminded us daily what he did and sacrificed for us? What if God reminded us of all that He’s invested in us, yet keeps coming up short on his return? What if Moses just lost it and cursed the children of Israel for their whining and complaining, and he just stomped off and headed to the promised land on his own? Oh there are so many “what ifs” that we can consider, and maybe that’s what we need to do every time we expect something of others that we wouldn’t do in return.

Liars and cheaters, which let me clear–cheaters are liars–they have a not-so-funny rule that only applies to everyone else but them. They can lie to you, deceive you, keep secrets, disrespect you, and do whatever they want when they want—but how dare you turn the tables on them. It’s hilarious to see more than one cheater/liar in a room or relationship together. They don’t trust each other, yet they want us to trust them. I guess there’s only room for one of them in any exchange.

They really need to ingest this scripture and make it a part of their life.

Now let me wrap up this already too long reflection with these last two statements…

Leaders should never ask their followers to do what they haven’t and won’t also do. Lead by example. Trust is gained by walking the walk consistently.

Parents who are untidy, messy, or complete slobs, shouldn’t demand cleanliness of their children. They follow your lead. So your actions and words will be repeated by your offspring.

Don’t expect of others what you won’t do for them. Period.

Proverbs 29:25

I won’t let the threats of what man can do dictate the steps I take in life. I won’t limit my journey or hide in fear. I won’t walk around with shoulders hunched and eyes heavy. My life isn’t centered around what man or woman can do for or to me, but rather serving and loving You Father. Humbly I praise You. Amen.

Reflection

Your stress and depression are oftentimes tied to other human beings. They are tied to things that won’t carry-over with you into your next level of existence. Your bills, roller coaster love life, insufficient paycheck, overdrawn bank account, disconnected family, balloon mortgage payment that you fear bursting, low credit score, fair weather friends—all of these things are human-based.

Our fears of failure are tied to our humanness.

God provides us with solutions that many times we overlook because we’re looking through a clouded lens, motivated by fear or even arrogance (thinking that we can figure it out by ourselves). Man and woman have limits. God doesn’t.

Trust in God and then watch as your lens becomes crystal clear.

Thank You Father for another day of life, love, lessons, truths, growth, opportunity, and Your molding. I may not say it enough, but I’m grateful for all that You have given me, done for me, and allowed for me to experience. I love You Father. Amen.

Reflection

Every day God puts things in motion for us. He opens doors of opportunity. He shields us, comforts us, listens intently, and loves us unconditionally. He equips us with the skills and talents to do the work that brings others closer to Him.

Protect your heart and mind from the enemy that lies in wait to attack your weak points. Protect your family, home, and career. Turn to and trust in God always.

Pray

Add a layer to me Lord, so that with You as my armor and shield I can continue to endure all that comes my way, in service of You. The past I cannot change, the future only You know, and my present lies with You. In Jesus’ name I pray for strength, courage, perseverance, patience, and understanding. Amen.

Reflection

Jesus knew how his days were numbered, knowing what must take place in order for his life to be aligned with the prophecies told long before his human birth. He knew that he would not see life beyond his thirties. We don’t have that clear insight. We know that we’re not going to life in these human bodies forever, but we don’t know exactly how we’re going to depart; we don’t know what events will take place to lead to the day of our transition. Even a person fighting cancer, HIV, dementia, lupus, MS, or some other disease or disorder, doesn’t know exactly what will lead to them taking their last breath. Rather than it being their disease, what if it’s another series of events…

Some people may believe and know that they won’t live long lives, such as my father, who told me in his late 30s and 40s that, “I won’t live to be an old man,” and true to his word he passed at the age of 48 from a heart attack. But he didn’t know the exact circumstances and details, and I know for a fact he wasn’t expecting to go that day, week, month, or even that year. My dad had huge plans for himself and our family.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. began to see that his journey would most likely lead to an early death at the hands of someone else. His conversations and speeches in his last year and months, reflect that he had insight or a gut feeling that he wouldn’t live to be an elderly man. He was correct. His human life was cut short at the age of 39. But I don’t think he knew the series of events that would lead to his assassination on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. He too had big plans lined up for the week, month, and year.

People who have been diagnosed with life-threatening and terminal diseases and conditions know that the odds are stacked against them, but even they don’t know exactly when and how they will transition. Rather than it be the disease, what if it turned out to be human error or an accident of sorts that leads to that person’s demise?

Whom amongst us knows exactly how they are to spend their final days? I’ve yet to meet a person where there’s been prophecy or a direct statement from God declaring the journey and end of someone’s path here on Earth. Where that person walked each day knowing that certain things would have to take place in order to trigger other events, that would eventually lead to their demise.

Since we are not sure of when and how we will leave this level of existence, shouldn’t we live each day to the fullest?

Jesus knew the prophecy of his life, that he would be betrayed and how he would physically die, yet he didn’t stray from God’s plans—he didn’t slack off from his responsibilities, or sink into a deep depression and hide. Instead, he lived each and everyday to the fullest, giving of himself to others, fully sharing in life and in love.

If you want to be more like Jesus, shouldn’t you model his thinking and approach towards life? Shouldn’t you live each day fully present, alert, and grateful? Shouldn’t you love deeply and honorably? Shouldn’t you give to the least of God’s children without question and judgment? Shouldn’t you jump out of bed excited and joyful because you have one more day of life, and a chance to do good for yourself and others? Shouldn’t you take the opportunity to right any wrongs caused by you or others?
