Breaking Bread For 7.23.20

Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Proverbs 3:9-10 NIV

It is easy to take the wages of our labor and immediately use them to pay bills and take care of necessities, and niceties. I get it. I do it too. The first of the two verses above says that we’re to honor God with our wealth and the first of our harvest.

Some people tithe in church, others donate to charity, others honor God by buying food or providing money to the homeless. Some of us just keep paying the bills and buying things we want. And there are those who can only pay on some bills not all, and they don’t have the luxury of buying for personal gratification. God knows each of our situations. He knows our heart and intentions. Speak to Him about how He wants you to honor and acknowledge Him.

I would like to focus on the real intention, the underlying but obvious sentiment of these verses. Those crops, our wages, are only possible because of God. We should honor Him, for without Him we have nothing. Only with Him does our wealth grow. Our cup runneth over because of His doing, not ours.

Putting God First

The busyness of life can sometimes throw us off track, consuming us with human priorities, as we quickly forget our spiritual ones.

There are days when instead of starting my day reading my Bible, praying, reflecting, and writing this blog entry—I instead trip into something else that I know is less important and meaningful. Those days I am weak. I am distracted.

So I pray to God for the strength to remain focused on learning and sharing God’s Word, and being the best servant that I can be. I also pray that God strengthens you, guides you, and opens your eyes to the numerous possibilities that life has to offer. I am grateful that He has brought us together.

Together let’s lovingly encourage each other to put God first as our day begins and ends, in all of our decisions, and in every relationship.

Father, I have placed other things before You. Today I didn’t start my day with You as my center and top priority. I got distracted by circumstances and people. I apologize for losing focus.

If it weren’t for You I wouldn’t be blessed and have the gifts that surround me each day. So to honor You I will not allow anything or anyone to distract me from praying and meditating each morning and each night. I will watch how I speak, control my thoughts, and consider the outcome before I act.

I give my time first to You Lord. Amen.

Have a blessed day!

Love always your sister in Christ,
