“Woe to the obstinate children,” declares the Lord, “to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin;…”
Isaiah 30:1 NIV
Think of the countless crimes that you heard or read about where the perpetrator declared their actions were done in the Name of God or inspired by God. What’s the most recent tragedy that you can recall? You probably spent a lot of time watching or listening to the news reports about this heinous crime.
Can you recall the first thing you thought about the next day? Did you ask yourself, “Was it all a bad nightmare?” just to turn on the news or look at the newspaper and be rocked all over again? Whenever I come across a news story about something tragic happening, I’m always stunned, and the next day I wake and wonder if it was just a bad dream. Then I pray.
I continue to pray for the minority of religious zealots (in all denominations) who think they are doing God’s work when they intentionally inflict harm on others. Whether it’s an act of violence or theft, we must be reminded of Isaiah 30:1 and understand that God will rebalance those scales that have been disturbed by obstinate children. I pray for all militaries and governments who try to balance God in their daily walk. It’s a heavy weight to carry when you know that you possess the tools that can take life that you didn’t bring into the world and have no authority over.
Think about something— if God TRULY came first, our world would be a better place. We do know that this world is clouded by chaos and confusion caused by the enemy. But we also know that the enemy has no power or authority over God. The enemy exists because God allows it. And by putting our trust in God, living the lives we’re supposed to live, and untangling ourselves from the web of sin, we can celebrate God’s victory over this nonsense.
Let’s never stop praying, believing, knowing, and seeking.
Father, forgive us for what we know and still do, and forgive us for what we think we know yet are ignorant. Forgive those who take the power You have given them and use it to harm others. They are so disconnected from You and broken that all they hear and believe are the lies of the enemy. Father, I pray for those who do harm and claim that they were called by You to do so. I know better. It hurts my heart that they would disrespect and disregard You in that way. Heal the hearts of those they harmed, directly and indirectly. Help me to love people even when I don’t like them. Help me to forgive as You do.
Father, I will never stop believing in You and trusting Your way. Help me to serve You better. In Jesus’ Name I come to You with a grateful and yearning heart. I love You!
